Make Your Own Baby Apple Puree

I prefer making all of my puree baby food with my microwave steamer. My reason for this, when boiling the vegetables or fruits you loose a lot of the nutrition in the quantity of water you use to boil them in. Where as with the steamer, the remaining water can be added to the fruit/vegetables to adjust to your desired consistency.

Baby Jason is now 8 months old and I have been making him home made baby puree since he was 4 months old. I must confess, I get my off days were I purchase pre made baby purees, I prefer the Hipp Organics baby food from Dischem.

The Hipp Organics range starts off from 4 months old witch helped as I started both my boys on solids at that time. Hipp Organics are delicious and tastes like home made food that has been pureed. All the other pre made baby foods are tasteless and both Mason and Jason does not enjoy them one bit – I can relate as I have tried a few.

my-post.jpgEquipment:

♥ Microwave Steamer
♥ Containers – to put your puree in
♥ Blender / Masher & Sieve

Ingredients:

♥ 1kg Red Apples – I prefer using Sweetest Little Red Apples from Woolworths
♥ Cup of Boiled Water
♥ Cinnamon Stick

Method:

♥ Wash the apples
♥ Peel all the apples
♥ Slice them into quarters – removing the core and seeds
♥ Add boiled water to your microwave steamer (as indicated in the instructions for your steamer)
♥ Toss the quartered apples and cinnamon stick into the steamer
♥ Steam in microwave for 12 minutes
* The apples are cooked thoroughly when you can easily pierce a knife through
♥ Puree – Blend/Mash the apples (not the cinnamon stick) to the desired consistency
* If using a fork or masher, you can put the mashed apples through a Sieve for a smoother consistency
♥ You may add from the remaining water to assist you in achieving your desired consistency – Only add a little bit at a time
♥ Cool down
♥ Serve OR Place in containers and freeze/refrigerate

The same method can be used with the following fruits:
Pears
Apricot

NOTE: I freeze all my baby foods in glass containers and take them out the night before to defrost in the fridge. By the time its dinner time, I take out the container and place it in a bowl with boiling water for 10-15 minutes and then serve it to our little Jason.
* When Jason was younger I used to freeze the puree in an ice tray, took the frozen puree blocks out and put them into a zip lock bag.

* This recipe can be frozen for up to 3 months and be kept in the fridge up to 48 hours.
♥ Please note, you can use the same ingredients and instructions, but instead of steaming you can boil it in water on the stove top ♥
